Understanding Indian Goods & Services Tax (GST)
The **Goods and Services Tax (GST)** is an indirect, multi-stage tax structure introduced in India to replace various local taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty. GST is a destination-based tax levied on the supply of goods and services.
The Calculation Formulations
- GST Exclusive Calculation: Calculated when tax is added to the base value.
Tax Amount = Base Price x (GST Rate / 100)
Total Price = Base Price + Tax Amount - GST Inclusive Calculation: Calculated when tax is already included in the retail price.
Base Price = Total Price / (1 + (GST Rate / 100))
Tax Amount = Total Price - Base Price
Understanding CGST, SGST, and IGST
Depending on where the transaction occurs, GST is divided into:
- CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on intra-state sales (within the same state).
- SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on intra-state sales.
- IGST (Integrated GST): Collected by the Central Government on inter-state sales (between different states).
Frequently Asked Questions
GST Exclusive means the tax rate is calculated on the net price, and then added to get the gross total. GST Inclusive means the starting price already includes the tax, and the calculator back-calculates to find the pre-tax base value and the tax portion.
For local intra-state transactions, the total GST is divided equally (50-50 split) into Central GST (CGST) paid to the central government and State GST (SGST) paid to the state government.
