Why Word Count and Readability Scores Matter in SEO

When writing articles, blog posts, or marketing captions, understanding text metrics is key for search performance. Search engine algorithms (Google PageRank) and AI models rely on readability indices and structure to understand if content matches search queries.

An article with low readability or stuffed with keywords might get flagged as spam. Our Word Counter & Analyzer helps authors format copy correctly by checking character parameters, sentence distribution, and keyword frequencies.

Understanding the Flesch Reading Ease Formula

The Flesch Reading Ease index is calculated with the following equation:

Reading Ease = 206.835 - (1.015 * (Total Words / Total Sentences)) - (84.6 * (Total Syllables / Total Words))

The resulting score falls between 0 and 100:

  • 90 to 100: Extremely easy to read (understandable by average 11-year olds).
  • 60 to 70: Plain English (understandable by 13 to 15-year old students).
  • 0 to 30: Very difficult (best suited for university graduates or research papers).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

While there is no strict minimum word count, standard research shows that long-form pillar content (between 1,000 and 2,000 words) ranks significantly better for search queries because it covers topics comprehensively.
Keyword density represents how frequently a word appears relative to the total word count. Maintaining a keyword density of 1% to 2% is ideal. Going beyond 3% may cause "keyword stuffing," which search algorithms penalize.
